Living with undiagnosed and untreated Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia and a leading cause of stroke, but as it is often asymptomatic, many people will remain undiagnosed and unaware of their risk of stroke. East Cornwall PCN is now working with a Life Science partner to put in place a novel digital diagnostic technology to support early detection of AF.
Digital Health technologies present opportunities for the early detection of Atrial Fibrillation (AF), resulting in improved detection and diagnosis of AF and by using these remote monitoring appliances to support patients with AF, we are working towards the prevention of strokes. These digital health technologies could be routinely used in the AF pathway, positively impacting patients’ outcomes and care delivery.

What is Atrial Fibrillation
A heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia). It usually involves a rapid heart rate, in which the upper heart chambers (atria) are stimulated to contract in a very disorganised and abnormal manner.
Symptoms of Atrial fibrillation
- Breathlessness
- Palpitations
- Dizziness
- Chest discomfort
AF is a common condition patients may be unaware of its presence and are therefore at risk of a stroke. Effective treatment strategies exist to control symptoms and the risk of stroke
Patient awareness is key and central to improving the likelihood of treatment success.
